I have no idea why I'm sopping wet in this photo, but I'm going to guess it's because I rolled in something filthy or spilled something on myself. Hosing me down was my dad’s favorite method for cleaning me off.	Here I am with my dad in his garden, which he adores and whose upkeep he takes very seriously. "It's my first love, besides your mother and horse racing. And you and your brothers, too, I suppose," he’s said.	My dad used to carry me on his shoulders quite a bit when I was a child--until the time I accidentally urinated on him while I was up there. We were at a neighbor’s house and he quickly ran outside, threw me off, ripped off his shirt, then hosed me down like he was from the CDC and I'd come in contact with the Ebola Virus.

My dad is an avid reader, and all throughout my childhood he’d come home after working for 12 hours and we’d sit on the couch and read together.	My family’s trip to the Grand Canyon in 1983 was one of only two family vacations we took. It coincided with the time when my dad started to lose his hair, and decided he'd wear hats to mask his increasing baldness. It wasn’t long before he changed his tune, tossed the caps, and decided he didn’t care what anyone else thought.

My daugter is 9 and loves anything to do with horses. So, when I was strapped for other ideas at the near-last minute for Christmas, I checked Amazon and found this book, along with a horse-related board game. This book is not very thick. In fact, I guess I was at first concerned by it's relatively few pages, compared to other activity books I have purchased for her in the past. However, the drawings in the book are of higher quality than any other activity book she has had. She really has enjoyed taking her time to try to match her coloring skills to that quality. All things considered, she is happy with it, so I am happy with it.

I wasn't really sure what to expect from John Connolly's "Book of Lost Things". What little information I had read about the title suggested that it was something of a child's fairy tale, with some rather darker themes that actually made it more suited to adults. I was curious to see what it was all about, though must admit that I've let this one sit on my to read pile for shamefully longer than it deserved.

The Book of Lost Things is somewhat like a fairy tales within fairy tales. It has that children's book quality of magic and immagination that I often find lacking in "adult" books, yet the magic is spiced with an adult-ness about it that made me squirm at the sheer horror and cruelty of some of it. This book is often very graphic and violant. Definitely not for the squeamish and those that don't like to read about blood and guts, children being eaten and people's heads being chopped off (which seems to happen quite a lot in this title, it seems). It even made me go "ewwww!" a few times, and I'd thought myself grown accustomed to the darkest horrors of a fantasy writer's immagination.

It's a good story. Don't be misled by the book's size though: the story is actually only about 350 pages long. The rest of the book (some 150 pages or so) are dedicated to the authors notes and commentary about the fairytales that inspired the book's creation.

I won't go too much into the plot itself, as I found that one thing that really heightened my enjoyment was not quite knowing what to expect. The ONLY thing that I can say spoilt the book for me a bit was an event that occured near the ending. I don't want to give away spoilers (and it would be a massive spoiler) but I just felt that after the main conflict had ended, the rest of the book felt rushed and a bit... lazy due to a certain character (who I felt was there simply for conveniance). Perhaps offers will argue differently, but that was just my view of things. Still, it was not so bad as to ruin my overal opinion of this book.

The Book of Lost Things is definitely worth a read.

Okay, but nothing special - Jackal - Singapore
This is a facsimile copy of a classic vintage book. I thought that would be cool. However, if you remove the dust cover, the book have a Times New Roman font on the back. How cool is that if you want vintage? The very least the publisher could have done was to make the book look totally vintage.

The drink recipes are good, but quite hard to mess them up. I would have loved footnotes regarding certain ingredients that are not common today. I know it is kind of geeky, but I think people in the market for vintage cocktail books are kind of geeky anyway. I don't belong to this group, I just wanted to have one book.

The index is very weak. The drinks are organised alpabetically and it would be nice to have an ingredients index at the back. If I want to do something with Bourbon I have to flip through the whole book for Bourbon recipes.

People tell me this is a classic so for that reason I give it 3 stars, otherwise 2 would do for the above reasons.

This is the latest volume in the Pushkin Press' admirable undertaking to make more of the brilliant works of Stefan Zweig available in English. The novella of just 81 pages is flanked by a Foreword by Paul Bailey and an Afterword by the superb translator Anthea Bell.

Ludwig, a young German of humble social origins, had fallen passionately in love with the wife of his wealthy industrialist employer, and she with him. Zweig - and his translators - have always excelled in descriptions of tempestuous emotions which sweep the reader along. Ludwig was sent on what was intended to be a two-year business mission to Mexico, but before the end of those two years the First World War had broken out, and it would be nine years before he returned to Germany and met her again, and the journey of the title is in part a train journey they take together from Frankfurt to Heidelberg. He was now married, and the industrialist had died. On the train he recalls the history of their relationship in the past. And now? And in the future?

One part of what lies ahead is when they came across a massive Nazi parade - just three years after the end of the First World War and twelve years before the Nazis came to power - as they left the station at Heidelberg. The novella itself was started in 1924, and Zweig probably worked on it as late as the 1930s. As the complete typescript was not found and then published (in a French translation) until 2008, it is impossible to know whether this episode, laden with menace, was part of the original draft. Zweig had always loathed war and the nationalism that gave rise to it, so it may well have been an example of his highly-strung prescience.

A superb novella - Darryl R. Morris - Atlanta, GA
Ludwig is a self-made man, who was born in poverty, put himself through university at night while working during the day, and rose to become the trusted right-hand man of a wealthy German industrialist in the years before the Great War. The industrialist is in failing health, and asks Ludwig to move into his vast estate. He initially refuses, but finally agrees. Upon his arrival, he meets the industrialist's beautiful young wife, who makes him feel immediately at home, and he soon falls madly in love with her.

Two years later he is sent to Central America by the company, and the trip is to last two years. He is initially reluctant to leave, due to his previously unexpressed feelings for his unnamed love. Once she finds out he is leaving, she admits that she fell in love with him from the moment she first met him, and they agree to consummate their smoldering love on his return. The meeting is delayed due to the onset of the Great War, but eventually he is able to return to Germany, and the two agree to meet. He feels the same passion for her that he had on his departure, but wonders if she will still agree to her promise.

Journey into the Past is a complex, passionate tale of love and how it can grow or wither with time and hardship. The story had me on edge for its short length, and is one of the best novellas I've ever read.

War. That is all the Mayor, with a gleam in his eye, can say. Somewhere, the scout ship of incoming settlers will be landing in the middle of Mistress Coyle's army oblivious to the chaos and Viola, ankles broken, galloping away from it all on her horse Acorn. Badly outnumbered and with two sides to fight, Todd and Viola are conflicted as ever. Peace or war, forgiveness or revenge, and hope or despair; if only the decisions were that polar. How much of their moral integrity are they willing to sacrifice to save each other?

Who could wait until September for the concluding book in this trilogy? So much drama, intensity, and unpredictable unknowns? I couldn't. There was no turning back once I calculated that for only a couple dollars more, I could have it now, and in the spiffy UK edition no less. (Which seriously, if we're talking about cover art, it has one of the most creative and one-of-a-kind book jackets out there. ) It also has to do with a certain author named Patrick Ness, who is the king of cliffhangers. The Ask and the Answer ended, again, with everything still on the line and a new plot twist. I can't help thinking: was he trying to kill us with suspense? But I can't see it written differently. Ness' signature chapter and ending cliffhangers reflect the entire tone of this series: furious pace, anything-can-happen, action-driven story arc for a futuristic people forced to settle a New World sans technology but with unknown alien natives and uttered thoughts called Noise.

More than the first two books in the Chaos Walking trilogy, Monsters of Men will unfailing hook you so that you can't put it down. Alternating sometimes as much as every other page between the perspectives of Todd and Viola, each viewpoint usually cut off mid-scene, mid-action, and on the brink of disaster, leaving you saying "what?". Being honest without a by-your-leave the incredibly fast pacing was almost overwhelming, veering on overstimulation. For those of you able to read each book in the series back-to-back, I don't think this would be an issue. It took me several pages to find my bearings and get emotionally back into the ambiguity of both the Mayor and Mistress Coyle's sides and feel invested. But once the third, differing perspective is introduced, my interest piqued and I easily let the brisk plot carry me along. A big light is shined on the Spackle creatures - what they're like, how they communicate, and how they fight. Frankly it was fascinating and combined with our increasing experience with the people of Prentisstown, the singular abilities of the Mayor, the growing capabilities of Todd, the healers of Mistress Coyle, the pieces began to fall together into a compelling whole. What are the origins of Noise, its capabilities and its true purpose? All of these questions that have been building on each other since The Knife of Never Letting Go are answered compellingly. To say I was completely satisfied with the conclusion after two books that leave you hanging is an understatement. That's not to say that Patrick Ness keeps you guessing until the final page, or everything is answered, but in the least all the loose end are tied up. Finishing Monsters of Men was a memorable experience for me which admittedly involved some crying. Before my bookpushing gets any worse PLEASE if you like scifi/dystopian YA in the least go out and get this series. You won't regret it. It was a near perfect series for me and will go on my all-time favorites list.

Amazing ending to the trilogy - Bonnie Svitavsky - Puyallup, WA
It's so hard to know what to say about this book. It's an amazing ending to the series, and it is worthy of all those cliches... my heart was racing while I read it, it kept me guessing throughout the very last pages for what would happen to my beloved characters, there were more twists and turns then you could shake a stick at, and I was in tears at the very end. I'm going to do my best to keep this spoiler-free.

This book, like the previous two in the series, deals with weighty issues of love, loyalty, trust, communication, and information. But Ness also delves into relationships between parents and their children, leaders and followers, and the responsibilities associated with all of these roles. And then there's the issue of redemption... can people go beyond the point of redemption?

The story focuses onto Todd and Viola, Mayor Prentiss and Mistress Coyle, and the Sky (leader of the Land - or Spackle as they are called by humans) and the Return (previously known to us as 1017). Outside of these main pairings, we have two settlers, Simone and Bradly, who are friends of Viola's and control the scout ship we saw landing at the end of The Ask and the Answer. And we have the returning Mistresses, Wilf and Jane, Lee, and Angharrad and Acorn (yes, I included the horses, because I LOVE those horses). As in The Ask and the Answer, we can draw the comparisons between the Mayor and Mistress Coyle, seeing how they each use power and politics to try and seize control. But, while I thought they were far too similar in the last book, we see them strongly diverge here as they both realize that the war has changed from the one that they started.

The reader is constantly shifting in this book, from the perspective of Todd to Viola to 1017. The changes are fast-paced and abrupt, which can take a little getting used to, since it feels like you're almost always having the rug pulled out from under you. However, it's worth it to keep with the story and just try to get into Ness's rhythm.

The ending is... ambiguous. It will make for excellent discussion, as will the way that the characters finish their own stories. Ness puts such a strong emphasis on forgiveness, acceptance, and hope throughout the series that I have a hard time not feeling hopeful at the ending. You really would be doing yourself a favor in reading this series. It has a little over everything... sci-fi, survival, adventure, animals, appeal to guys and girls, romance, super powers, and war. Maybe that makes the book sound overloaded, but it's also a beautiful story with characters who will stay with you long after you've finished reading.

On a slightly offbeat note, I don't think I'll ever be able to read or hear the word "Todd?" without getting choked up. Just typing it now has me tearing up!

I immediately purchased the rest of the series and was absolutely glued to my Kindle!! Thanks to the author and I thank Amazon for putting this book out there for anyone to grab up!

Wow, where to start.....This book had so much potential. The allegory, the characters, but it seemed to fall short in every area.
I felt like the book wasn't quite ready gestating, before it sprang into existence.
Overall, I felt like the story ran ahead of itself. In a rush to get to the plot points, we forgot about character development, setting, engaging prose and story line. The book read more like an outline than an epic story.
For example, the characters are extremely shallow and archetypal. They are very hard to relate to, have very little back story and seem to change without much stimulus. Rather, the author needed them to be brave, they are suddenly brave. The author wanted doubt, voila, doubt. Characters pop in and out at random giving me the feeling that I missed a section or two.
I also felt like the prose was jumpy. It seemed to be heavy handed, practicing using big words, but didn't really carry me along in the story.
What a shame. This seemed like such a unique approach, that got lost in....the telling. Go back, rewrite it, but give it some more heart, deeper characters, time and growth.

Light of Eidon was an entertaining diversion, if a bit predictable.

Christians may find this book quite inspiring -- even on a fantasy world there exists God the Father, with His will for our lives from which we can run but not hide, and his Son come to dwell amongst us in human form so that we may know Him and so that He can atone for the great debt we owe His Father (debt incurred by trying to deny Him and His will).

Hancock adds a twist to Christian allegory that C.S. Lewis left out of his Chronicles of Narnia, namely the idea that there are multiple peoples of faith who share some beliefs and scriptures in common. The existence of these multiple faiths can make it difficult to discern the truth faith from false ones, but The Light of Eidon is surprisingly ecumenical for a Christian allegory in that it raises the theme that people from different faith traditions can nevertheless come together, in part because of the commonalities of their divergent backgrounds.

After reading this book, however, Christians on Earth might come to wish that the Christian God offered such visible signs of his existence as does Eidon.

(Those reading my review might be interested to know that despite this qualifying as a "Amazon Verified Purchase," I got Light of Eidon as a free Kindle download and despite enjoying the book enough to read it completely will not be purchasing subsequent titles in the Guardian-King series.)

This book is wonderful. I taught a thematic unit on The Farm and used this as my Big Book for teaching reading stratigies and introducing my unit. The book starts out with an empty field and continues to add farm animals a few at a time into the farm yard. The attention to detail is great and give opportunity to predict and develop the child's attention to detail by including hints to small additions like baby field mice. It finishes with all the animals in the barn sleeping. The children can review the animals who are sleeping in the barn and you can teach other characteristics of the animals throughout the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who teaches children, including parents because you are your child's first teacher.

I have been reading this story to my son since he was born. Two years later, he still LOVES it! So much so, that we are on our second copy. What a sweet story about barnyard animals. It's a short tale that progresses from day to night with the farm animals. As an aside, another reviewer mentioned that a butterfly is on each page. I've had fun trying to find it. Great children's book!

I bought this book before my daughter was born, because it was such a cute, classic book for children. It's been around for ages, gets wonderful reviews, is written by the extremely prolific children's author Margaret Wise Brown, and features a toddler favorite-- farm animals! I LOVED how the illustrations shows life at the farm progress from day to night through the lighting-- the sunset page and the night page are just lovely. And I loved that it is a goodnight book, with all the farm animals asleep in the barn by the end.

Now, for the real test: My daughter. At 14 months, has several farm themed board books and, I am sad to say, this one is not her favorite by a long shot. Every time I try to read it to her, she gets bored about three pages in, and this is NOT her reaction to all books. Having watched her reaction to this and other books, these are my conculsions about why this one is not as engaging: (a) The cadence is not that great for a M.W. Brown book. It can read kind of awkwardly. (b) It is short on things like animals sounds and long on references that young toddlers cannot grasp, like references to children who are not there (but usually play there) and a golden weather vein (NO way board book age kids will understand what that is). In terms of learning about animals, pointing them out, and hearing mommy make their sounds, she much prefers other farm books (for example, My First Farm: Let's Get Working! (My First Board Books). In terms of classic toddler fiction books, she much prefers others like Baby Animals or I CAN FLY (Little Golden Book). In terms of board books, anything by Karen Katz is a bigger hit than this.

Before my daughter was born, I probably would have given this 4 stars, because I love it (despite the sometimes slightly awkward language), but I can't give it more than 3 stars, given my daughter's reaction thus far. If she changes her mind, I'll update the review. For the record, this book came up recently and my husband (not really knowing which books are "classics" that my daughter owns and which are not), deemed this book "boring." So, that's two thumbs down in our house against my one.

I bought this book for my 2 year old son, in hopes of getting him interested in potty training. Within a few days of reading it to him every night, he had the whole thing memorized! He tells me that if he goes pee pee and poo poo on the potty, he won't have to wear diapers anymore so he's really starting to grasp the concept. Unfortunately, he has yet to actually go on the potty but this book really seemed to increase his understanding of the subject and willingness to sit on the potty and try.

The Potty Book - For Boys - Anna M. Ligtenberg - Chicago
ISBN 0764152327 - I'm not the best person to review a potty training book. My son is an adult, for one thing. His potty training took days when he was 14 months old and he never used a potty. So my review is of the book itself, rather than of the effectiveness of it as a toilet training tool.

Henry is a happy child who has lots of fun. Before he can get started each day, however, he has to get his diaper changed. One day, Mommy has a large box just for Henry. Inside is his very own potty, for when he's ready to try it. It takes him time and he has some setbacks, but eventually the big day comes - Henry uses the potty successfully! Henry assures the reader that they, too, can do it.

Things to know: Clearly they use the word "potty". Personally, I prefer the word toilet, and other parents might use other terms. Henry uses the words "pee" and "poop"; you may prefer other terms and even your child's preschool or babysitter can be a factor in the choice. (For example, I know of a preschool that teaches the kids to say "I need to use it", without specifying what "it" is.) Henry has a mother and father, while your child may have one parent or two parents of the same gender. Henry uses a little potty on the floor; some parents may simply opt to use the toilet. None of those things mean anything to me but may be factors in your decision to use this book.

The rhyming text, by author Alyssa Satin Capucilli, is okay, but gets stilted every now and then. The rhyme starts out smoothly, with the rhyming parts on each set of facing pages, but it gets clunky as the second line of the rhyme is eventually moved onto the next page. Illustrator Dorothy Stott's images are basic and cute and, although they're not terribly special, they do capture the text well, especially Henry's happiness when he is finally free of his diapers.

Poetry collections can be quite valuable things - picking one up rather than a body of work by a single author frees one of the apprehension that comes with committing to that author's work and the possibility that said author's work might not be worth owning in such a concentrated format. Conversely, a collection of multiple authors can open a reader up to poets they may have never come across otherwise. Indeed, that was one of Milosz's aims in putting together this compendium - to largely deflect the focus from the accepted and reliable canon (though Robert Frost and D.H. Lawrence do find their way in somehow) as well as provide work from an international selection of authors (though the concentration is frustratingly biased toward English, Polish and Chinese language works - not a bad thing in of itself, but it does play against the international appeal to some degree). The other criteria is that the poems be "short, clear, readable and, to use a compromised term, realist, that is, loyal toward reality and attempting to describe it as concisely as possible" (p. xv). The work rarely sways from this description, though like any good author Milosz isn't afraid to break his own rules. What you arrive at in the end, then, is a collection of easily approachable, short works of poetry that tend to shy away from a philosophical or fantastic focus. That is not to say that the philosophic and fantastic are not there in the poets' intentions, thoughts and/or subtext, but they do not overwhelm the pieces. As for the editor's contributions, he formats each page by introducing the poems with a few sentences about them printed above, but I found that the best way to read the work was to start with the poem itself and then read the editor's note. I felt that reading these notes undermined the sense of mystery and discovery that comes with navigating one's way through a new poem, though reading these thoughts after usually provided me with some new insight into the piece. However, I did feel that his interpretations left little room for argument and undermined the multiple layers that many of the works here comprise. It was as if there could be no individual readings that differed from what Milosz thought - though this was not always the case, and more obvious in his tone than his content. Another point of bother was his critique of some of the works; for example, his note on Jean Follain's "School and Nature" - "Frankly, the modernist technique consisting of unexpected associations is not to my liking, as at the end of this poem, in which drops of blood fall upon a road. In order to understand this, we must presume that there are hunters in the neighborhood, that they shot a bird, and that a wounded bird flies over the road" (p. 162). These are rare, but when they are there I can see no constructive purpose; if someone likes the image they may feel embarrassed or frustrated that the editor has forced them into arguing with them, and if they interpret the image a different way than his literal understanding, an unconfident reader may feel, again, embarrassed, and one more sure of themselves may feel irritated at the editor's apparent limitations. In any event, I can see no good in this type of note, especially in that it is printed before the poem itself and thus one may be inclined to read it before the poem, probably putting a damper on their experience. As I said before, however, this type of thing doesn't happen too often, and when it does we can forgive it, because, qualms aside, this is a very good collection of poetry. Though not every piece is awe inducing, to ask this would be somewhat ludicrous, and more often than not the works were quite enjoyable. I found many that touched me deeply, and almost all of them had multiple ways in which they could be interpreted, multiple layers and viewpoints, and thus one can come back to any number of poems again and again. Layers aside, these are all works that are short, approachable and enjoyable enough to be reread multiple times, and as long as one knows to read the editor's note after, not before as the format suggests, the poem itself, anyone can find great value in this collection.

I loved specially the contributions of Herbert, Hass, Milosz, Levertov, Swir, Jeffers, and Szymborska.

This text will stay on my shelf long after I have completed my Master course. While its chapters are not exhaustive, it offers an accessible, balanced treatment of the major grammatical constructs and patterns of English; pertinent subsystems such as tense and aspect, articles and determiners, and adjectives and adverbs; and offers not only a morphosyntactic treatment so common to other volumes but also a discussion from the perspectives of discourse and usage.

The book is not without its shortcomings, but these are largely discussed by the authors. Suggestions for further reading follow each chapter, and there is an extensive references list in addition to the index.

I have some misgivings about suggesting this as a general reference, although I am certain many who purchase the volume may use it not only as a text but also as a reference book. Discussion of grammar is sometimes quite theoretical and so does not always provide the quick usage rules for which teachers and students might be looking. This is not the aim of the book, however. Rather, it is designed to be used for pedagogical grammar study and awareness raising on the part of the teacher. Part of this study includes understanding that when looking at English from a discourse perspective, uncertainties still exist.

Overall, a balanced and very useful treatment. The exercises are sometimes not as helpful as they might be. However, this text can be supplemented with a text centered on formal syntactic study, which would likely offer more formal exercises. Also, nothing can replace examining and analyzing authentic texts.

Great Deal The Fairy Godmothers and Other Tales

I have enjoyed all of the free fairy-tale type stories available for the Kindle. I have read many of them in the last few months, including this one. A few weeks after finishing this book, it still stands out as one of my favorites. After seeing that not very many readers have reviewed this book, I felt compelled to share my opinion. If you like to read fairy-tale type stories for children (Grimm's fairy tales and the like), then this book is highly recommended.
I also thought the themes of the stories were pretty original, when compared with other, older fairy-tales. The reader isn't always 100% sure how the story would turn out.

Not Impressed - Mithril - USA
If what you are looking for is a book of overly-stereotypical fairy tales involving florid prose, impossibly eloquent children, simplistic moral messages and occasional digressions into the philosophy of time and wishes, then this is the book for you. Otherwise I'd suggest saving your time and reading something more accessible.

Stories included are:
The Fairy Godmothers: Five fairy godmothers get together for a philosophical discussion of the merits and problems of various fairy-gifts they can bestow upon the newborn. Unable to conclude anything useful from their debate, the fairies decide to experiment on their godchildren to see what gift brings the most happiness to humans.

Joachim the Mimic: Joachim finds a Genie on the beach and wishes to be able to imitate everything that is good in the world. The Genie says that the best he can do is give Joachim the power of imitation, and Joachim must learn for himself what is good and what is not.

Darkness and Light: A family with a sea-castle and fairy ancestry also has a son who is scared of the dark. Although his parents wish that their fairy relative would help their son get over his fear, the son is blinded by a stray piece of sand and must learn to live entirely in the dark.


The Love of God: I didn't read this one because I'd had all I could stand of the writing style and clever, philosophical children. (I may have cried "for the love of God! do not make me read another one!" upon seeing it.)

Rainbow fish is a great book for young kids. It has colorful, sparkly images, and a simple story line about sharing. This is a great book for young kids to learn the importance of sharing what they have with others, and that what's on the outside doesn't matter nearly as much as what they have on the inside. I've read many reviews about how the fish is giving away his originality, which left those readers believing that this is a negative message to send to kids. In the ultimate age of the egocentric youth and me-me-me-the-world-revolves-around-me, it's okay to send to message to kids at a young age that giving a part of themselves to make others happy can be a good thing. And giving up the "pretty" part of themselves may make them happier in the end, as long as they maintain their integrity and create relationships with those around them.

Don't Waste Your Money - John Peak -
I am one of the countless many that think this book is for the trash-bin. Did they import this from North Korea and translate for fawning liberals??

If you really don't think you child is exceptional, or should never think of himself as such then you should buy. If you believe your child should lower his standards or be embarrassed for possessing something others don't have then definitely buy this book. If you think a book where one indiscriminately gives away material stuff to be popular gives a positive message about sharing then this book is a must-have.

....Otherwise save your money.

Our daughter was ready to read but anytime we asked her to tell us what a word was she would shut down. She just wanted to read the books she had memorized. We gave the entire Bob books set for Christmas and she won't put them down! Because the books do such a good job of introducing only a few sounds at a time she is able to read most of the next book in the set she has never seen before on the first try so she feels great success. I am a teacher and have recommended these books to any of the Kindergarten teachers I run into. Yesterday, my daughter asked to take one of the books to her preschool class and she sat in the teacher's chair and read to the class.

These books were better than I imagined for turning my reluctant reader into a ready reader. Thanks!

Bob Books for Early Readers - Matthew J. Mitchell - Germany
Although somewhat new to teaching (4th Year Full Time) I really like the Bob book series. I bought my own copy because I wanted to bring a copy to my new school. Problem is, htey liked them so much they added them to the library for 0-5 year olds. Now I need to buy them all again. I bought Set 1-5 and have used them in conjunction with flash cards to teach children to read from scratch(set 1) up to early development of phonograms and vowel sounds(sets 4 &5). i really like them and would recommend them to any parent or kindergarten teacher.
p.s. I also used them as an aid in TEFOL to young students.

Our Family loves to read. All types of Books. This was a gift for my Son. When I give a book to my friends, they usually ask if I have read it. Whenever I say "No" they ask if I would like to ? (after they have read it) So I feel it is gifted back to me. And of course, we have a good discussion about the book!

Ok, we have a space fleet cadet/officer - stellar performer, having troubles due to adversaries' intrigues, but supported by benevolent senior fleet commanders. We have an evil theocratic regime troubled by economical consequences of its evil policies and looking for salvation in nefarious covert operations involving murder, sabotage and space piracy. We have a bad guy who saw the light and decided to redeem his sins. We even have a prison planet named "Hell".

The characters are absolutely flat, the plot has gaps large enough to drive a truck through, the writing is full of repetitions and just plain bad.

If you're a Weber's fan you will stumble upon adoptions from page 1 and will be bored and disappointed by page 11. If you're not, save yourself some time and money and go straight to the original: "On Basilisk Station", "The Honor of the Queen", "The Short Victorious War", etc.

once i got passed all the boring politics....wow. i couldnt put it down. read the next in immediately...then the last one. i hated to put them in my archives. the character salander is spectacular.

I am so glad that I finally found some bad reviews for this book. I was beginning to feel like a pariah--sort of like how I felt when I appeared to be the only person in the world who hated the movie, PRETTY WOMAN.

With all due respect to those who have practically a cult-like love for this book--I just don't see the appeal.

Our hero is a man-bimbo who is simply irresistable to women of all age groups. I know it's Sweden; but his "relationships" are simply vapid, empty, and defy believability. He is such a passive, agreeable little ho. We never even know if he is attracted to the women who can't help but seduce him. Even an angry, anti-social, asperger suffering, vigilante, bi-sexual, who never even talks to anyone, starts seeing white picket fences when she is in Blomkvist's presence. Even though she has just suffered a violent, brutal beating and rape by a sadist that would have killed any other 90 pound, 4'11" woman, she is able to nonchalantly seduce the passive Blomkvist just days later.

The author spends about one paragraph on Blomkvist searching his soul over ignoring his daughter for years on and wraps it up with the very profound sentence on about page 600: "Blomkvist was a bad father." Oh well. The next sentence he is back to the cabin being a compliant little man toy.

And the plot!!! Oh my. Defies silliness. From the get-go it is just assumed that only a dead body could have been sneaked off the island. And why consult with Harriet's former best friend/cousin, who happens to work for an airline and travels internationally (hence the pressed flowers)?--when you could solve a mystery by tracking down various angles of obscure photos from 36 years ago? And some people can live happily ever after, even after enduring the most egregious of violence as a child--and never bother to report the crimes even anonymously.

One-dimensional characters, silly detective work, very convenient clues and everything falling neatly in line from 36 years ago. The redeeming value of the book is only in the last few pages. But even that is just too, too contrived. I feel a little bad for dissing this, since the author is dead and can't defend himself, or maybe didn't get a chance to edit.

If you want good character development, plot and mystery, read Ruth Rendell/Barbara Vine or Margaret Atwood.

So, I finally get around to reading this INTERNATIONAL PHENOMENON. Where to begin? Hm... Well, first of all, it's really poorly written. The writing style is trite at best, often choppy, full of unenlightened cliches, red herrings and loose ends that never get tied. As far as the plot is concerned, the mystery is fairly predictable, and the plot "twists" utterly unoriginal, except to say some of them are just DISGUSTING for the sake of being disgusting. People make a big ado about how the female protagonist is such an "original creation" and a heroine of post-modern feminism, blah blah. No. Lisbeth Salander appears to be just one of Larsson's (many) ways to exploit and glorify rape and female brutalization. By the way, the book's title in the original Swedish is "Men Who Hate Women." That's right, even the original title sucks. At some point, Lisbeth decided to sleep with the OTHER (utterly unimaginative) main character (who smells oddly of Larsson himself, and yet is apparently a walking aphrodisiac) only to first lament in the mirror the fact that she allegedly has no boobs. Seriously: a heroine for the ages??? Also, what's with all the product placement in this novel? Was Larsson getting kick-backs from Apple? I guess we'll never know now...

Watch the Swedish film instead, which is much better than the book, seeing as it's free of Larsson's crappy writing and many of his pointless "plot details" (most of which involve everyone having sex with the Larsson stand-in anyways).
